Why do we never get an answer, when we're knocking at the door

In the entire history of the London Underground, has pressing the open door button, even pressing it a bunch of times, made the door open even an instant faster than it would normally open? I suppose it probably does make people feel better, more in control of their lives. I wonder if the buttons are even hooked up to anything or if they are just fake buttons.
